Experiment # 5

EFFECTS OF RESERVOIR STORAGE ON RUNOFF

Object: To study the effects of reservoir storage on runoff

Apparatus: Basic hydrology tank and stopwatch.

Experimental Setup/ Methodology:

The effect of a flood detention reservoir on the runoff from a standard storm is demonstrated by using an open ring when partly buried in the sand to form a circular reservoir.

Similarly, a closed ring can be used to retain the rain that falls on it and to release its water slowly through the center aperture.

All available vessels are used to simulate detention reservoirs and it is found that any shallow container will serve so long as it has a small drainage hole made in the center.

Observations:

Rainfall intensity = ______ lit/min = ______ lit/sec;

Storm duration = ____ sec; Runoff step = _____ lit/sec
