EXPERIMENT # 13
CREATION OF A BASIN MODEL OF ANY CATCHMENT IN HEC-HMS
Object: To create a basin model of any catchment.
Accessories: HEC-HMS Software.
Theory: The hydrologic modeling system is designed to simulate precipitation runoff processes of watershed systems. designed to be applicable in a wide range of geographical areas for solving the widest possible range of problems. This includes large River basin water supply and flood hydrology, at small urban or natural watershed runoff. Hydrograph produced by the system or program are used directly or in conjunction with other software for studies of water availability, urban drainage, flow forecasting, future urbanization impact, reservoir spillway design flood damage reduction, floodplain regulation, and system operation.
The program is generalized modeling system capable of representing many different watersheds. A model of the watershed is constructed by separating the hydrologic cycle into manageable pieces and constructing boundaries around the watershed of interest. Any mass or energy flux in the cycle can then be represented with a mathematical model. In most cases, several model choices are available for representing each flux. Each mathematical model included in the program is suitable in different environments and under different conditions. Making the correct choice requires knowledge of the watershed, the goals of the hydrologic study, an engineering judgment.
The program features a completely integrated work environment including a database, data entry utilities, computation engine, and results reporting tools. A graphical user interface allows the seamless movement between the different parts of the program. Program functionality and appearance are the same across all supported platforms.
CREATION OF NEW BASIN MODEL
A new base and model is created using the Basin Model Manager. To access the manager, click on the components menu and select the Basin Model Manager command. The manager will open and show all the basin models currently in the project. The manager can remain open why you manage basin models or while you perform task elsewhere in the program. You can close the manager using the X button in the upper right corner. The buttons to the right of the model list can be used to manage existing models or create a new one. To create a new basin model, press the New…. button. After you press the button, a window will open where you can name and describe the new basin model that will be created. A default name is provided for the new model; you can use the default or replace it with your own choice. A description can also be added. When you’re satisfied with the name and description, press the create button to finish the process of creating the new basin model. You cannot press the create button if no name is specified for the new model. If you change your mind and do not want to create new basin model, press the cancel button or the X button in the upper right to return to the base and model manager window.
