Introduction to the Engineering Geology Laboratory and HSE (Health, Safety and Environment)
Measures.
INTRODUTION
Laboratory safety is of great importance that’s why OSHA (occupational safety and health administration) created rules to ensure safe laboratory practical for everyone.
Many rules are created for worst situation. Remember many time we are with dangerous chemicals and precaution and safety is required all the times.
All the staff and the students who use the laboratory should take care of their own health and safety and others all the time.
For the reason both the staff and students have their own responsibilities which are as under
RESPONSIBILITIES OF STAFF:
- Staff should take action to eliminate or reduce hazards which they are aware of.
- Staff should use of all personal protective equipments.
- Staff should seek for information if they are dealing with unfamiliar work.
- Maintain proper dress standards.
- Only consume food or storing food in some particular area of laboratory.
- Staff must be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures in case of emergency.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENT:
- Students must know the entrance and emergency exit of laboratory.
- Students must know the use of fire extinguisher in case of emergency.
- Wear shoes that are fully covered (bare foot, thongs or open toed sandels are unacceptable).
- Wear appropriate clothing to avoid safety hazards.
- Wear safety goggles or glasses.
- Wear lab coat with full sleeves.
- Wear gloves.
- Wear long pants.
- Wear closed toed shoes.
- Comply with instructor in case of confusions.
- Food and drinking items are not allowed.
- Smoking is prohibited.
- Must remain in designated areas.
- Do not touch any instrument unless you are instructed.
In geology lab there are some experiments which are with the use of acids so precaution is always required.
